Serenya's Song Blog Tour - An Interview with Mysti Parker

As part of the Sereyna's Song Blog Tour, I am pleased to once again have the fantastic Mysti Parker on my blog. Those who follow my blog may remember that I did a review of Serenya's Song a few months ago (see HERE ). Well today, I have a very special interview with her talking a little about Serenya's Song and how the reaction has been to it so far. Let's not waste any time and get to the interview! There's a little special something at the end of it to!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly, can I start off by saying what a pleasure it is to have you on my blog once more!

~Nah, the pleasure’s all mine. Thanks for inviting me!

1) So, for those who may not know who you are already, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m a wife, mom of three (four if you count my husband), and a writer. Somewhere, long ago and far away, I earned a biology degree, which I draw from now to recreate the natural world of Tallenmere. I live in the beautiful state of Kentucky in the USA, and though I love to travel, I couldn’t imagine calling anywhere else home.

2) The first book in your Tallenmere series was A Ranger’s Tale. Can you explain a little about that book?

A Ranger’s Tale is a coming of age story, even though the heroine is a 100-year-old high-elf. Caliphany Aranea decides she wants more out of life than being forced to follow in her father’s footsteps to lead the Mage Academy. However, the great wizard, Sirius Aranea, already lost one wayward child to death by letting him follow his dreams. He’s not about to let Caliphany wander around on her own, so she isn’t allowed to leave the high-walled elven city of Leogard without an escort. One morning, she decides to explore Leogard Harbor alone and is almost kidnapped. Luckily, a half-elf sailor and ranger by the name of Galadin Trudeaux comes to her aid. Not long after, Caliphany devises a plan: Galadin can train her to defend herself so she can finally set off on her own.

Easier said than done…little does she know that her plan will evolve into a harrowing adventure with more danger, more love, and more heartache than she ever thought possible.

3) Without giving away too many spoilers, what can readers expect from Serenya’s Song?

This story follows the life of Jayden Ravenwing, a prominent male character from A Ranger’s Tale. He’s a wood-elf and the lead scout of the Leogard Intelligence Organization, but after his marriage ends, he leaves Leogard to start over again in a small town called Summerwind. That’s where he meets the enchanting half-elf, Serenya Barnaby-Crowe. She’s his perfect match in every way.

For anyone who’s read ART, they’ll be rooting for Jayden to have a chance at a happy ending in this one. Unfortunately, Serenya’s Song is longer, darker, and the stakes are even higher. Though it’s obvious Serenya and Jayden are made for each other, a few things stand in the way. She’s married already, to the cruel and manipulative Sebastian Crowe, Earl of Summerwind. Oh, and one other little thing…she just might be the trigger for an apocalypse. No one ever said love was easy.

4) How long did it take you to write this one?

A little over a year, from start to finish. I’d like to thank my critique partners who stuck it out through each draft and encouraged me when I hit a slump. Without them, this book wouldn’t have gotten off the ground.

5) How do you feel about the reaction to Serenya’s Song so far?

Reactions have been extremely positive so far, with higher praise than I ever could have imagined. I mean, you get a book out there, and you never know how people will react to it. You’ve been so close to the thing for so long, it starts to get as monotonous as a series of re-runs. It was like a roller-coaster ride, with me loving and then hating things about it, but the reviews have validated my hard work.

6) Do you prefer Sereyna’s Song to A Ranger’s Tale?

That’s a hard question. I love different things about both of them. Like headstrong Caliphany in ART, who was a bad-ass fire mage and ranger, but had to grow up and accept responsibility for her actions along the way. But I like Serenya too, in that she starts out rather weak and intimidated, then grows stronger and more capable as the story progresses.

I loved both my heroes—Galadin, tough ex-pirate and ranger who wants so badly to right his past wrongs; and Jayden, a meticulous secret agent with a broken heart and a few tricks up his sleeve.

I must confess that I’m proud of Sebastian’s character in Serenya’s Song. I credit the book-turned-movie, Water For Elephants, for his development. In early drafts, he was mostly a big, mean brute. After I saw that film and Cristoph Waltz’s portrayal of the manipulative, cruel, and sometimes desperate August, I knew exactly how Sebastian needed to evolve.

7) Where do you go from here?

From Serenya’s Song, another male character, Sir Robert (Igrorio) Everlyn, a high-elf paladin who helped Jayden and Serenya in the fight to save Summerwind, sails off for a routine crusade. But, fate catches up with him…

Here’s the blurb for Book Three, Hearts in Exile, which I’m hoping will be out in the spring of 2013.

Somewhere, hidden in the waters of the Southern Sea, lays an island unlike any other. Within the amber glow of its pyrogem-laden cliffs, legend says the very heart of the dragon god Drae keeps the island, and its occupants, alive.

Loralee Munroviel, daughter of Leogard's High Priestess Arianne, had no idea what she would face when she arrived by boat ten years ago and was left alone for an indefinite exile. All she knew about Draekoria's inhabitants was written in one tattered notebook. Now, her life revolves around keeping Drae's descendants happy. Never in her life did she imagine being a dragon keeper.

Captain Igrorio Everlyn, known as Sir Robert to his unit of Holy Paladins, has faced his share of hell, battling the evils of Emperor Sarvonn's tyranny and the dark god, Tyr's abominations. But none of that compares to the ten years of hell he's been without Loralee, presumed dead, struck down by a minor version of the Great Plague that took his mother and countless others years ago.

One freak storm changes everything. Now the two of them must fight to reestablish the delicate balance of the island before the dragons take things into their own hands. Through it all, they discover the secrets that kept them, and their hearts, exiled for a decade.

8) What would you say is the best advice you can give to anyone who wants to be a writer?

Writers write, and they read. You have to do a lot of both to become better at it. Discouragement is an easy trap to fall into, yet you have to have patience, and a LOT of it. Like any other art, writing takes practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll get. And don’t write in a vacuum. While I don’t think a literature degree or MFA is necessary, you should at least find some fellow writers online or in person and give each other feedback. You’ll learn a lot from each other, I guarantee!

Mysti, thank you very much for your time today!

Pandragon Reviews - Serenya's Song

The sequel to A Ranger’s Tale, which is hands down my favourite book of 2011 from independent authors, this book is set in the world of Tallenmere – a fantasy world of elves, magic and some incredibly crafted characters that feel real even in a fantasy setting. (see my previous review of A Ranger’s Tale on Read2Review here).

Serenya’s Song follows Jayden Ravenwing and his halfling assistant Lilly as they travel to Summerwind so that Jayden can forget his past. Having left Caliphany so that she can enjoy her life with Galadin, Jayden is happy enough to forget all about love. Until he meets the enchanting Serenya. Alluring and pretty she may be, Serenya has a pretty tortured life. Forced to wear gloves due to a disfigurement and subject to an abusive husband, Serenya is haunted by some dark dreams – and a monstrous side of her that she is struggling to control.

Cue demons, a battle for the very safety of Tallenmere and lots of elfish sex! This is has some adult sex scenes, so not recommended for younger readers.

Cover

As much as I do not judge a book by its cover, I have to say that I’m not entirely fond of this cover. It’s not a bad cover by any means and has our main characters at the fronts. But when you compare it to the cover of A Ranger’s Tale, (see below) it just doesn’t stand out for me.

I do like the character designs though and Serenya looks pretty much as described in the book. But Jayden looks like he’s about to fall asleep in this cover. Also, a minor nitpick, Serenya is said to wear gloves in the story – but I don’t see any on her here. Overall though this is a decent enough cover and works within the theme and context of the story.

Overview
I was extremely excited to be given a copy of Serenya’s Song, given that I loved A Ranger’s Tale so much. I loved the characters and fact that the story focused more on relationship issues as opposed to the usual swords and sorcery that you normally got. I loved Caliphany as a headstrong female lead and liked Galadin as a hero as well. Jayden was actually my favourite character in A Ranger’s Tale and I did feel sorry for him by the end – so it was nice that he was the protagonist in this book.

Whereas A Ranger’s Tale had a somewhat loose (but still thoroughly entertaining) storyline, Sereyna's Song story is much more focused. It follows around a demon portal that threatens to bring a great evil to the world. Right from the opening prologue, I was hooked in on the story and the foreshadowing of the evil that was coming. It set it up quite nicely for the rest of the story to follow.

Jayden was a little shifty in A Ranger’s Tale, but in this one he’s a much more likeable and sympathetic hero. Had I not read A Ranger’s Tale first, I may have found him a little bit too overly emotional – but because I knew his character very well, I was able to look past this. It was also great to see Lilly, the wise cracking halfling return again – she was a great source of humour for the book.

Serenya, the title character, I was in two minds about. Whereas Caliphany in the first book was a very strong and likeable character that was very strong willed and fleshed out, I felt that Serenya was a little too much like a damsel in distress for my liking. I wished she could have stood up for herself a little more. Her husband was such a complete and utter p**** that I just couldn’t see why she was still with him. That being said, once you learn about her past, you’ll understand why. And to be fair, Serenya does get a lot stronger as the book went on.

The “villains” of the piece are Lord Crowe (Serenya’s abusive husband) and Cevil Demarr, a shiftly looking bloke to say the least. Obviously, there is more to their characters than you first expect – but I won’t say why! Let’s just say that there was a great twist to these characters when it was revealed that actually took me by surprise.

Other new characters to be included are elves Shade and Zephyrus and paladins Sir Francis and Sir Robert. I don’t know why, but the paladins ended up being my favourite characters out of the new ones. They didn’t really stand out in terms of personality or impact on the story – I just felt they had the best magic out of all the characters. Maybe it’s just because I have a tendency to like knight/paladin type characters anyway, but I thought the paladins were just awesome. I would have liked them to be in the story a bit more.

It was also great to see Caliphany and Galadin return to aid Jayden in his quest to help Serenya. I would have liked to see more made from this though, given Cali’s and Jayden’s history – maybe even having a bit of a rivalry between him and Galadin. There was some, but more could have been made of this plot point in my opinion.

Now onto the main characters - Jayden and Serenya. Their story I thought was just brilliantly done. Like with Cali and Galadin in A Ranger’s Tale, I could really feel the love and the heartache between these two characters and wanted them to get together. I also liked the “animal” like lust that they felt for each other and felt that was described brilliantly as well. Admittedly, I thought that their first “bedding” happened a bit too soon in the story – but given that Serenya wasn’t always in control of her actions, this wasn’t an issue. The romance between them is very steamy and erotic, so fans of erotic fiction will certainly be happy with this one.

I couldn’t find any issues with the story, no plot holes or things that left me questioning why this happened. The book is a little bit longer than A Ranger’s Tale, but it is a joy to read. And it has some interesting plot twists that I felt worked. And the teaser at the end of it for the next book just wetted my appetite even more.

PROS (sing when you’re winning):
   - Great romantic/escapist fantasy.
   - Believable characters.
   - Strong story with no plot holes.
   - Interesting plot twists.

CONS (singing flat):
   - Heroine a bit too much of a damsel in distress.
   - Could have done more with the Jayden/Caliphany/Galadin plot.

Summary
Whilst I think I preferred A Ranger’s Tale, I had been looking forward to Serenya’s Song for a long time and I was not disappointed. It was a fantastic read and a great successor to the last book. The demonic subplot worked well and acted as a great antagonist for the heroes to overcome and prove their love. Once again Mysti Parker proves that she is the queen in the Romantic Fantasy genre. My only problem is that now I have to wait for the next book!

For fans of Adult Romance/Fantasy Romance, check this one out and also A Ranger’s Tale. They are both fantastic novels that will get your hearts fluttering and your minds racing!

FINAL SCORE: 4/5

Top Five - Indie Books You Should Be Reading

Being a reviewer on the website Read2Review , I’ve had the chance to read the works of some truly talented writers. Don’t get me wrong, I do like to settle down with a good book now and then, writing by one of the mainstream authors – but I have a special affinity for indie authors, probably because I am one myself.

Indie authors used to get painfully overlooked in the days before – but thankfully these days, readers are more open to trying new things. With technology advanced in such a way that people can release their books dirt cheap – or even give them away for free, readers are able to discover hidden gems and new talent. What I love about indie authors is the way that they can put out the story the way THEY intended to, without any input from a publisher or agent. And I think this is great.

Whilst I always go into a review with the purpose of being unbiased, I do occasionally find authors that I just fall in love with and books that I find are just so effortless and enjoyable to read. Therefore, in a slight change to my usual Top Five Tips, I’m going to showcase the five indie novels that I think you should be checking out. I’ve tried to mix and match the genres a little so that I don’t talk about the same thing, so there should be something for everyone here. Some of these authors are published through small publishing companies – but for the sake of argument I am including them as indie authors (because indie authors doesn’t necessarily mean self published in my opinion, any author that is published through a lesser known publishing house can be considered indie).

So, here we go. These are the five books and authors that I think you should be checking out. I’ll also include a few links to check them out yourself.

1. A Ranger’s Tale by Mysti Parker

Ok, I’ll admit it – I’m somewhat of a fan boy of Mysti Parker. She’s kinda like my writing idol at the moment! When I first read A Ranger’s Tale, I honestly didn’t think I was gonna like it – but I did. In fact, whereas I hardly read romance books before, I have a greater appreciation of them thanks to this novel.

A Ranger’s Tale is an Adult Romantic Fantasy set in the world of Tallenmere, a world where elves are the main race and the centre for the characters. A Ranger’s Tale is set around a high elf called Caliphany and a half-elf called Galadin. Cali lives a sheltered life, but longs for something more, whereas Galadin is trying to escape his tortured past. Their paths meet and fireworks start to sparkle.

In many ways, A Ranger’s Tale uses a lot of fantasy tropes that have been used before – but the good thing about it is that Mysti Parker doesn’t go out of her way to make it overly magical and over the top, but rather creates situations that we ourselves would find ourselves in. The characters are brilliantly crafted and have real emotional depth, so we can sympathise with them and their plights. I think this is because the chapters are told in a POV way so we can see what the characters are thinking and feel their thoughts. A bold move but it works well.

I love the character of Cali – she’s a very strong heroine and I think that female readers will love her for her feistiness and vulnerability. Galadin is equally well rounded and likeable. The other character of mention is Jayden, a wood elf that has the hots for Cali. Even though he does start off a little sinister, I must admit I did feel sorry for him at the end.

In order to make Fantasy work, the world and characters must feel realistic and relatable. And A Ranger’s Tale does this brilliantly – the characters are beautifully crafted and the world of Tallenmere is realised enough to believe that it does exist. And Mysti even grants us some backstory of the world in her blog and Facebook and this is great. I love hearing about the history of fantasy worlds and their creation – makes me appreciate the story more.

The next book in the series, Sereyna’s Song is out very soon and I can’t wait to read it. But until then, let me just say one more thing about A Ranger’s Tale. It’s a fantastic book – even if the ideas have been done before, Mysti has found a way to use them so that you don’t care that you’ve seen this before. Her characters are brilliant, the romance is genuine (if a little steamy at times) and the story just sucks you in so that you have to keep reading. In short, read it!

2. Airion – Return to Zire by J.S Council

For those wanting a Fantasy/Sci-Fi with a more young adult edge, I suggest checking out Airion – Return to Zire.

Now, I actually gave this author a bit of a hard time in my review, given that the version I was given to review had a lot of spelling mistakes and formatting issues – but these have now been corrected so I can now concentrate on the book as it is. And it’s a very entertaining book indeed!

The novel is set around 2 twins, Kobi and Rali, that thought they had a pretty simple life on land. Just before their 14th birthday, the twins are separated and dragged to the underwater land of Airion – where they find that this is their true heritage. Now stuck in a war between two nations, the twins discover that they have a higher purpose – and secret powers that they soon discover will shape the world.

It’s a very exciting story, filled with colourful characters and some very impressive fight scenes. Reading this, I actually imagined that this would work well as a Manga/Anime. And given that the author lives in Japan that would be a great idea. Also, J.S is one of the hardest working and down to earth people I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to, via guest blogs and interviews and I was worried that she would find my review a little harsh. But she took the comments with grace and dignity – that is the sign of a good author!

Do please check this novel out. It’s an exciting read and one that I do recommend. In fact I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as the first one left me wanting to know more. The content isn’t too violent either, so younger readers will be able to enjoy this as much as adults.

3. CASTLES: A Fictional Memoir of a Girl with Scissors by Benjamin X. Wretlind

Now, I’m not usually a fan of horror if I’m being honest. Main reason – I just don’t find a lot of them very scary. Most of them seem too heavily of blood and gore for their scares and honestly, that just doesn’t do it for me. Horror needs to have an atmosphere, to build up the tension and terror, not just have loads of body parts everywhere.

With Castles, it has no problems. Yes, there is a fair share of blood and disgusting images – but that’s not the focus of the book. The main focus is around the central character, Maggie, and the journey she takes. Living in a trailer park in an almost apocalyptic atmosphere (with constant thunder and dust storms), the book chronicles Maggie’s descent into madness as she starts off an innocent young girl and then transforms into a psychotic killer.

That being said, you actually can sympathise with Maggie a little as she goes through a lot of trauma in her life, ranging from an overbearing and overly protective mother to abusive spouses and boyfriends. Her only consolation is the spirit of her grandmother, who advised Maggie to “clean up her messes”. Acting as a kind of guardian angel for her, Maggie finds inner strength to gather pieces for her “Castle”. Unfortunately, this means bad news for those who end up crossing her!

Castles did what no other horror book I’ve read has done – disturbed me long after putting the book down. And that is what a good horror should do. I think that it’s because this book is told entirely from the POV of Maggie that she’s almost trying to justify her actions as the right thing. This makes her even creepier as she seems utterly desensitised to her actions. Whether you think she’s a victim or a villain is left up to the reader to decide.

Castles has a great atmosphere, a psychological terror and a main character that is both monstrous and innocent at the same time. If you want a great horror read then look no further than this one. Although I doubt you’ll ever want to use scissors again afterwards!

4. Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat by Andrez Bergen

Humphrey Bogart, Blade Runner, Mad Max, Jap-Anime, Australian Humour, Film Noir – these are just SOME of the things I could use to describe this novel but it wouldn’t do it justice. This book is all these things and more!

From the title alone, you could almost expect to be reading a sort of obscure comedy – but you couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, we get a post-apocalyptic city that is bleak and unfriendly. With the threats of “Deviants” ever present in the last remaining city, it’s up to our hero Floyd to find a way to save the day.

Thing is, Floyd doesn’t care about that. All he wants to do is to drink himself stupid and forget his tragic past – which is the result of his job as a Seeker. Constantly referencing obscure and classic films, Floyd tells us his story in his own way – through good old Aussie slang! He’s both humorous and depressing, but thankfully the author treats the main character with enough respect to know when to take it seriously and when to have fun. And because the book is written with the Aussie sense of humour and style in mind, it adds a fresh new look to a subject that has otherwise been done to death.

You wouldn’t think that a novel could fit in so many themes and references without being convoluted, but Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat blends it all nicely like a perfect set of ingredients to make a fine whiskey. Not once was I ever bored when reading this book and really wanted to know what was going to happen to the main character. Hands down this is my favourite indie book that I’ve read so far and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a unique science fiction read.

5. The Priest and the Peaches by Larry Peterson
You may think just by looking at the previous books I’ve mentioned here that I only review Science-Fiction and Fantasy type books, but actually, on occasion, I do like to read and review “slice of life” books. The Priest and the Peaches was one of those slice of life stories that I was handed as part of a blog tour. Admittedly, I didn’t think too much of it on first hearing about it – but on reading the book I fell in love with it.
Set in the 60’s, the Peach family have recently lost their father and now have to cope without his guiding hand. It forces Teddy and Joanie to grow up quickly and become the guardians of the household through no fault of their own. From here on, we follow the trials and tribulations of the Peaches as they struggle to cope without their father. But they are not alone and there are those who are willing to help them cope.
This is one of those rare gems that you discover when leaving your comfort zone. This book is just a beautiful to read. It’s a real testament to the bond of family and the kindness of human spirit. The book does have religious overtones to it and is the overall theme of the book. Seeing as religion tends to often be shown negatively in some fiction (and even in real life), it’s nice to show the positive side of religion – after all, the recurring theme of the book is L-Y-N (Love Your Neighbour) and this is what keeps the Peach family together in times of hardship.
I honestly didn’t think I’d be recommending this book, but I just felt like I had to. It’s a wonderfully written tale that is moving, funny and genuinely heart-warming. We genuinely care about the Peach family and hope that they end up right at the end. I actually think even the hardest of hearts will probably find a tear in their eye reading this tale. If you just want to read something that will warm your heart then look no further to this one.

Those are my picks for five novels that I think deserve a chance to be read. Please give them a try – you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for reading and feel free to leave a comment below.
